The woman with two small boys peered over the counter and asked, "Do you have chocolate-covered footballs?"

"Yes, we do," said Patti Ann Cerezo, whose reply might have been that Sweeties Candy Cottage in Huntington has just about anything and everything when it comes to candy.

And Halloween, said owner Lisa Hodes, 43, signals the start of her shop's "real season."

With so many costume parties and dances for younger adults, Hodes said, Sweeties started jumping Friday with customers looking for specialty candy and toys, spooky centerpieces - the ones with skulls are popular - or "horrifying" gift baskets. The store's toys include - for what is also likely to be a frightening weekend for tiny ghosts and goblins - BooGoo and Squishy Balls.

After Halloween, Easter is the busiest of Hodes' candy-craving holidays. The Thanksgiving to Christmas period is sugar-packed, too, followed by Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day.
Hodes left a job as a consultant for Fortune 500 companies after divorcing in 2002. She purchased the candy store about 41/2 years ago to be as much a stay-at-home mom as possible. Since then, she's combined her two passions, candy and toys.
